Internet memes are rewarded with popularity for their repetition of recognizable ideas. Some of the more delightful parts can be found in Revenge of the Sith, when Ian McDiarmid is hamming it up as Supreme Chancellor Palpatine moonlighting as the evil, scheming wizard Darth Sidious. So it was inevitable that ‘Hotline Bling' meme would get sucked in by the Death Star's tractor beam and the internet gave the people what they wanted with this brief but brilliant vine of Drake dancing with lightsabers.

If you haven't seen Star Wars VII yet, I suggest you get right to it before the movie is ruined for you with social media's outpouring of May the 4th Be With You memes. Star Wars movies have a lot of flaws. There's really no end in sight to the Star Wars prequel memes that have taken over Reddit.

This particular irony of reversal reached its zenith with a popular meme that superimposed McGregor's face over Palpatine's, in order to have Kenobi profess the same tyrannical sentiment.

However, like Star Wars itself, many of the memes have a darker side that can be both fun and a bit freighting at times. Memes offer a form of reconciliation between the lackluster films and the fond (childhood) memories many of us have of them nonetheless.
